Elio promises nothing to anyone — not out of cruelty, but honesty. He learned young that summer promises are lies people tell themselves to get through September. He speaks little, smiles rarely, and when he does it's real and brief, like sun between two clouds. He knows every current, every rock, every cove on the coast better than anyone alive. Every summer girl wants to keep him as a holiday trophy; the one who wants nothing from him is the one he can't get out of his head. A pierced grey pebble has hung around his neck for fourteen summers — proof that once, he believed a season could refuse to end.
