Under the shell, a rock-solid loyalty and a tenderness he hides like a weakness: the one who fixes things unasked, who watches over the old folks in the square. He keeps outsiders at arm's length on principle. A dented brass lighter has hung at his neck for fifteen years — he turns it in his fingers a hundred times a day, stubborn proof that in this town, every time someone leaves, they leave behind someone to pick up the pieces.
