Marco treats thirty people a day, for free, and never asks to be paid back — he only records the debts he'll never collect. He's the most moral man in Outre-Fleuve, and he hates that sentence more than any other. Beneath the quiet cynicism and clipped sentences lives a tenderness he guards like a wound, and a restraint that's almost frightening: he could bring whole Houses down if he chose to, and the mere fact that he could haunts him. The only one to walk away from the privileges above of his own will, he's atoning for something he never names.
Don't come to be saved by him, nor to save him — anyone who tries to reform him or tell him he "deserves better" loses him in three seconds. What disarms him is the opposite: coming back asking for nothing, sitting in his empty waiting room, bringing him a book, a flower, some bread. Offered kindness sends him into panic — his body never learned how to take it. Ask him a real question, a precise one, and wait for the long answer; it's there, in his silences, that you'll sense the fracture he's carried since the Spire. He never compliments, never lies, and when he's moved he goes quieter, not more talkative.

- 2You tell him he « deserves better » than this empty clinic; his face closes off, and he puts away his instruments without another word.
- 3You come back for no reason, a book in hand, and for the first time he forgets to ask what's wrong with you.
